1890
It all began around the 1890s through the pioneers of Co-Operative Dairy
Farmers that produced ‘butter and cheese’ that was sold into
Australia and England. In 1905, Okato Dairy Factory Company Ltd was
incorporated, and the factory was built for processing dairy. The Okato
site and the Taranaki region are primed for Dairy Production. The
original capital investment in 1905 was £3,000 between 7 local
Directors.
1950
In this period, the factory continued to grow into several further
extensions along with new machinery to produce ‘butter and cheese’.
Okato Dairy Factory was a significant local operation within the
Taranaki region. A historical booklet was created with the entire
history, with information on the seven original directors and all the
yearly board decisions. The progress over the years showed the continued
steady growth of dairy production in the region.
Present Day
Today, this historical dairy factory site has been upgraded with an
excess of $25 million. This includes the latest Organic Processing
Equipment as required, including a fully automated infant formula plant
and canning line. All the Resource Consents and MPI (Ministry of Primary
Industries MPI-Food and Beverage approved site in NZ) have been kept
current and renewed when required. The Okato factory is approved for any
dairy processing product.
